Grundfos CR Series: Vertical Multistage Pump Guide
Share
Not every pump problem is a circulation problem. Boiler feed water, high-pressure washdown, water purification, and general industrial fluid transfer all demand something a standard circulator was never designed to deliver: real head pressure, often hundreds of feet of it. Grundfos's CR series exists specifically for this category of work, and understanding how it's engineered helps explain why sizing one looks nothing like sizing a MAGNA3 or an ALPHA2.
What Makes a Vertical Multistage Pump Different
A standard circulator pump uses a single impeller to move water through a system with relatively low resistance. A vertical multistage pump like the CR series stacks multiple impellers (stages) in series, each one adding to the total head pressure the pump can generate — water passes through stage after stage, gaining pressure at each one before exiting. This is what allows a relatively compact vertical pump to generate head pressures a single-stage circulator simply can't reach.
Reading the Model Number: Flow and Stages
Grundfos CR model numbers follow a straightforward pattern: the first number indicates nominal flow rate capacity in cubic meters per hour, and the second number indicates the number of stages. A CR 1-10 is a smaller-flow pump with 10 stages (built for higher pressure at lower flow), while a CR 15-10 handles significantly more flow at a comparable stage count — both generate substantial head pressure, but at very different volumetric capacities. Reading the model number correctly is the first step in matching a pump to an application, since flow and pressure requirements from the application need to land on a specific flow/stage combination, not just "a CR pump."
Common Applications
- Boiler feed water — supplying makeup water to a boiler against system pressure, where a standard circulator's head pressure capability falls well short of what's needed.
- High-pressure washdown — industrial and commercial washing applications requiring sustained high-pressure water delivery.
- Water purification and process transfer — RO systems, filtration loops, and general industrial process water handling where elevated pressure is part of the process itself, not just overcoming pipe friction.
- Municipal and large-scale water supply — at the larger end of the range (CR 10-10, CR 15-10), stepping into municipal-scale and heavy industrial duty.
Sizing: Flow and Head, Not Just Connection Size
CR series sizing is a genuinely different conversation from circulator sizing. Instead of matching pipe connection size and rough GPM, you need the application's actual required flow rate (in GPM or m³/hr) and the total dynamic head the pump needs to overcome — including both static lift and system friction losses at the design flow rate. These two numbers get plotted against the manufacturer's performance curve for each CR model to confirm the pump actually delivers the required flow at the required pressure, the same fundamental logic as circulator sizing, just operating at a much higher pressure range.
Maintenance: Shaft Seal Kits
Like any centrifugal pump, the shaft seal is the component most likely to need service over the pump's life — it's what keeps process fluid from leaking out around the rotating shaft. Grundfos publishes CR-specific cartridge mechanical shaft seal kits (HQQE type) matched to specific stage-count groupings — for example, a kit covering CR 1/3/5 pumps differs from the kit covering CR 10/15/20 pumps, since the shaft and seal dimensions scale with the pump's size and stage count. Keeping the correct kit on hand (or knowing which one to order) for your specific CR model is what keeps a seal failure a quick repair instead of pump downtime.
Bottom Line
The CR series solves a fundamentally different problem than the rest of the Grundfos circulator lineup: real head pressure for boiler feed, high-pressure transfer, and industrial process applications, built through a multistage design rather than a single-impeller circulator. Sizing one starts with the application's actual flow and head pressure requirements, not a pipe connection size — get those two numbers right and the model selection follows directly from the manufacturer's performance curves.
